Hello everyone,

Welcome to the 84th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, a weekly newsletter where I collect all the new cannabinoid science. You can check out last week’s issue here & if you haven’t subscribed yet, please do. Sign up for a paid subscription to support my work disseminating all of the cannabinoid science.

Paid subscriptions are here.

There’s no extra content with a paid subscription - but as I balance creating free content, consulting work & papa time, your support allows me to produce more educational content for the community.

I also give one-on-one Cannabinoid Education Sessions with advice about using the cannabinoids for your health.
Read my free How-To Guides, watch my Three-Minute Cannabinoid Science videos or book a session with me here.

As always, here’s the Glossary of Cannabinoid Terms & at the bottom is the album of the week.

Announcements

No newsletter next week because I’m taking my oldest to my family home in PA to celebrate her 6th birthday.
I’ll see you the second week of January with a refreshed design of ‘Cannabinoids & the People’!

This week…

  • How cannabinoids help with stress responses & coping
  • Again, cannabis for PTSD & neuropathic pain
  • More on prenatal cannabinoid exposure effects
  • Sperm slowed by the cannabinoids
  • Cannabinoids found in the Jamaican nettletree
  • #partiersgottaparty
  • A poor kid who swallowed a vape pen cartridge because of the cops coming

I spent 3 years working full-time for PlusCBD before I launched my consulting business so I know from the inside about their commitment to making quality CBD products. But that’s not the most special thing about them. What they do better than any other company in the industry is create a wide range of products.

Nobody else has this much…

  • Oils, capsules & gummies of course, including Max Strength
  • Topicals that come as balms, creams, roll-ons & special formulations for arthritis or athletes that contain menthol & camphor
  • The Reserve Collection! Oils, capsules & gummies containing from 2.5 mg to 5 mg of THC per serving (I’m constantly being asked how people in non-medical can get THC-rich products & this is always what I recommend to them. Especially because it’s an easy-to-use standard serving size that’s just the right amount for people new to THC)
  • A Reserve Sleep gummy with 25 mg CBD, 2.5 mg THC, 3 mg melatonin & 5 mg CBN
  • Excellent pet products in a range of flavors
  • THC-free CBD softgels & gummies
  • 3 very special formulations with other ingredients:
    • Sleep gummies: Includes 3 mg of melatonin + extract of lemon balm & magnolia bark (two old plants for inducing sleep)
    • Calm gummies: Includes 5-HTP (the serotonin precursor) & L-theanine (from tea)
    • Relief capsules: Includes PEA + CBDA (see the Living Glossary for why I think these are the ingredients of the future for immune health & gut health)

This is why I recommend PlusCBD to so many of the clients I consult with: they offer an array of products like no other.

Buy their excellent products today at PlusCBDoil.com.

In a small study of people with PTSD, medical cannabis use improved their mental health & symptom severity scores, especially in reductions of nightmares & improved sleep quality
Improved Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and Related Sleep Disturbances after Initiation of Medical Marijuana Use: Evidence from a Prospective Single Arm Pilot Study
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37965569/
It's interesting to note that most of the changes occurred in the first 30 days but the improvement to nightmares didn't show up until 70 days. Sometimes with the cannabinoids, it takes time for them to work.

In a Thai study of neuropathic pain patients, cannabis caused almost half of them to have at least a 30% reduction of pain scores & many saw significant improvements in quality of life, especially sleep - but as always around 10% could not tolerate this side effects & had to stop using medical cannabis

From Quebec public health data, the adverse event reports of cannabis
A Descriptive Analysis of Adverse Event Reports from the Quebec Cannabis Registry
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37996777/
“The most common PTs [preferred terms for an adverse event] for ingested MC [medical cannabis] (62 reports) were dizziness (12.9%), nausea (11.3%), somnolence (9.7%), and vomiting (8.1%), and for inhaled MC (23 reports), headache (13.0%) was the most common. The most frequent PTs associated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-dominant MC (25 reports) were dizziness and somnolence (12.0% each); for cannabidiol (CBD)-dominant MC (20 reports), vomiting (20.0%) was most common; and dizziness (17.2%), nausea (13.8%), somnolence (10.3%), and headache (8.6%) were the most frequent for balanced MC (58 reports).”

An evergreen note on reading restricted papers:
First stop for seeing if there’s a free version of a paper, use the Google Scholar Chrome extension (Mac version), Google Scholar itself or try ResearchGate.
Three other helpful browser extensions are: Unpaywall, Open Access Button & PaperPanda
For the infamous backdoor, use
Sci-Hub – the pirated papers repository (Chrome extension here). This works better for older paper than the stuff that just came out.
Finally, email the author. They’re almost always happy to oblige because, thanks to the predatory academic publishing system, they don’t make a dollar off of their papers.

Ugh. A woman in Oklahoma is being prosecuted for medical cannabis use during pregnancy. The state Supreme Court is being asked to step in & end the case

In the cannabis industry, Whitney economics produces a survey on the “existential threat” of delinquent payments
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/delinquent-payment-issue-represents-existential-threat-to-cannabis-industry-302015101.html
“The preliminary results of the survey are compelling.

  • 43% of respondents stated that delinquent accounts receivables are impacting operators' ability to service their debt
  • 32% of respondents stated that delinquent accounts receivables are impacting an operator's ability to pay state or federal taxes
  • 59% of respondents reported that delinquent payments are having a greater impact on their business than federal tax policy 280E.
  • Some respondents indicated delinquencies were in excess of two months of revenue, totaled millions of dollars and that they needed to run their yearly operation on what amounted to 10 months of cash flow.

The delinquent payment issue has more acute impacts on cannabis operators since they generally do not have access to traditional financial tools such as bridge loans or loans against account receivables. As a result, predatory lending is pervasive with interest rates often running between 33% - 50%. Given the federal illegality of cannabis, operators do not have access to bankruptcy protection, so if a business fails, the result is individual wealth destruction.”

The Dutch cities of Breda & Tilburg begin their experiments with selling legally grown cannabis
https://apnews.com/article/netherlands-coffeeshop-cannabis-pot-a313926f955339828175984054753a06
If you thought the Dutch have been doing this for decades, you'd be wrong. Their policy has been gedoogbeleid (“policy of tolerance”) where you're allowed to sell cannabis out of the front of a shop & they ask no questions about how it got into the back of the shop. However, this has led to no standards for quality & safety as well as organized crime moving in on unregulated cannabis growing. Overall, it seems likely that this system has led to the Netherlands losing their place to California as the leading producer of top shelf cannabis.
